HTC explains the lengthy Android software update process

Frustrated why your phone is still running an age old android OS and some of your friends getting updates as soon as they are released ?

Why do some variants of a phone get KitKat while others lag behind?

Stop staring angrily at that useless system update button — HTC has launched a software update dashboard which explains the update process for its devices and shows the KitKat update status for the various flavors of the HTC One.

It’s one of the age-old problems of Android : manufacturers are free to tailor the OS as they please, but with those fancy customisations, they’re simultaneously making it all the more difficult to roll out updates when the next version comes around.

The diagram details the Android update process for carrier-branded hardware as well as unlocked devices and even Google Play edition units, giving us a nice explanation on how the three typres of products differ. The operator-specific hardware requires the most work of the three because HTC must work with the carriers to determine which apps and tweaks that they want added to their version of a device, then HTC must take extra time to implement those extras. Meanwhile, the unlocked and Google Play edition hardware have update processes that are fairly similar, though the unlocked units do require an extra step in which HTC adds its custom Sense user interface.

So next time you get frustrated with your mobile phone company just have a look at the image below and be happy. :-D
